The Ultimate Winter Break

5 Fun Things to Do During Your Winter Break in Australia

Winter in Australia might seem like the antithesis to what we love most about our Sunburnt Country, but the truth is that it’s pretty bloody rad.

Running in most parts from June to August and called the dry season in the Northern Territory, our winter is definitely different depending on where you live. You might have balmy temperatures in the north or frigid temperatures in the south. Winter in Australia is also less crowded, so you can definitely find vacancies for whatever it is you want to do.

No matter how you prefer to spend your winter, you’re guaranteed to have fun in Australia. And speaking of… here are a few things the team at Uptown Pokies can recommend you try. Check ‘em out now and let us know what you think.

1. Escape to the Whitsundays

If you’re not all that keen on cold weather, the good news is that you can always escape it in Australia. Just book a trip to the Whitsundays, which average about 24°C on any given day.

While there, you can snag a cheap boat rental and sail around what many call Australia’s most beautiful islands. You can also go swimming and snorkelling if you’re feeling adventurous or simply lounge around and sunbathe if you just want to relax. It really is the ultimate winter escape for warm-weather fans, so make sure to suss it out if you’re craving some tropical mid-year heat.

2. Explore the beautiful Kakadu National Park

As mentioned previously, winter in the Northern Territory is their dry season. This means that there’s bugger all rainfall and agreeable weather for the most part.

It also means that Kakadu National Park is ripe for exploration. With majestic infinity pools such as Gunlom Falls plus waterfalls like Jim Jim Falls, you’ll be spoiled for choices when it comes to finding somewhere to cool off. Of course, Uluru is also worth a visit if you’re in the neighbourhood. Just make sure to get there for sunset if you want to see those red rocks come ablaze in the evening light.

 3. Encounter fish and whales on the Great Barrier Reef

The Great Barrier Reef is an absolutely spectacular sight for all those who haven’t seen it. It’s a natural treasure and it’s simply stunning, but one of the best things about it is the fact that you can visit it during your winter break.

Go on a snorkelling trip and observe a huge variety of fish flush with every colour of the rainbow or let the current wash you over the many colourful coral heads that the reef is famous for. And since you’ll be swimming outside of stinger season (November to May), you won’t have to wear a wetsuit.

Oh… did we also mention that winter is peak whale season in Australia? This means that you can observe these beautiful creatures as they swim and frolic in their natural habitat.

4. Hit the slopes in Victoria

If you do prefer the colder climes, then the southern state of Victoria will be right up your alley. Home to the hip city of Melbourne, Victoria receives some of the coldest temperatures in the entire country.

This makes it the ideal destination to visit if you want to enjoy some snowy activities, such as skiing, snowboarding or even tobogganing. There’s Mt Baw Baw for instance which is only a few hours from the city or Mt Buller, which is famous for its steep runs and excellent powder.

Then once you’ve had your fill of the slopes, you can watch a game of AFL at the Melbourne Cricket Ground or go for a stroll through the Winter Night Market at the Queen Victoria Markets.

5. Watch an epic sled dog race

While we’re on the subject of snow-related activities, you simply cannot miss the Falls Creek Dog Sled Classic. According to many people more knowledgeable than us, it’s apparently the premier alpine sled dog race in all of Australia. And who are we to argue?

Involving 30 sled dog teams and over 350 individual dogs, the Falls Creek Dog Sled Classic is a one-of-a-kind race that always brings in the crowds. This year it’ll be held over the 14th and 15th of August. All ages are welcome and the entry fees to view it has even been reduced. So if you’re already in Victoria to check out the snow, it might be worth your while to take a peek at this event too.

We hope this list helps, enjoy your winter break!
